I'm often asked how to redesign your image when looking for a job. While this is different for every situation, there are some common factors to consider:
Map Out a PlanWhere do you want to be in a year ... or how about five years? Write down what career you will have, how you will look, how you will behave, and how you will be treated by those you work with. Now, the moment of truth ... how close does today's image match up? This will give you some direction for change. The first step is to observe others in the company or position you want to have. Pick a role model to emulate. Make sure it's someone who is already succeeding at the level you want. There's no point in aspiring to someone who is at or below your level. The next step is to begin making changes that move you in the direction of your goals. Do you need to change your hairstyle? Maybe your whole wardrobe? Don't try to do it all in one week. Always remember the saying, "You can eat an elephant a bite at a time." Start with your short-term goals and go from there. Soon, you'll see your "elephant" being conquered. Along with making changes comes giving up old habits. Do you have bad posture? Do you bite your nails or jangle your keys? Now is the time to kick the habit. Remember you can learn or unlearn a habit in 21 days. If you start this week, you can be over it within a month!
